" COATS MAN DROWNS IN IOWA GRAVEL PIT"
A 23 year -old Coats native, George Durwood Barber (Barbour), drowned in an Iowa gravel pit yesterday when he went swimming with some other truck drivers.
His sister, Mrs. Mary Catherine Wood of Erwin, said the family received few details, One of those swimming with him attempted to save him, she said, and was nearly drowned himself.
Barber, a former employee of Lee's Truck Terminal in Dunn, was last home on Easter Sunday, He had driven up to Iowa for Southern Motor Lines of Richmond and was on a layover waiting for a load to take back.
Well-known in Coats and Dunn, he went to work for the truck terminal here when he was 16 years old. following his father's death.
In 1952 he and two other youths were tragically injured in a wreck at Benson and he remained in the hospital for approximately two years.
Funeral Services are not complete as yet but are to be held in Harnett County.
Barber is survived by his mother, Mrs. Gertie Barber of Coats; by three sisters, Mrs. Wood, Mrs. John E. Norris of Dunn and Miss Cynthia Barber of the home; by two brothers Bennie of the home and Wilson of Forest Park, Ga; by two half-brothers, James Barber of Willow Springs and Ralph Barber of Benson; by a half-sister Mildred Ennis of Angier; and by his maternal grandfather, George Matthews of Wilmington.

Note: The last name Barber is also spelled Barbour for reasons unknown to Family Members
